At Home With Annie: Fall Decorating

I love Fall. I actually do not think I've ever met someone that does not like Fall. I mean, crisp mornings, perfectly warmed days, fall foliage in color, the juiciest honey crisp apples, chunky sweaters, boots/booties, and the annual return of Starbucks Pumpkin Spiced Latte (#PSL, anyone?). So what's not to love, huh? As a matter of fact, if you don't like all things Fall, we probably wouldn't be friends. But with that said, my ultimate favorite Fall thing to do is, decorate my house and take the first match to my pumpkin something scented candle each year. Read below for a few tips and tricks when it comes to adding a little Fall love in your home.

  • Decorate with Fall leaves, pumpkins, gourds, etc. If you do this, your decorations will see you through Thanksgiving and your hard earned money spent will go further. Meaning, if you just decorate with Halloween decor, you're limiting your season and the appropriate time your decorations can be up.

  • Speaking of, buy fake pumpkins and gourds for your outdoor deccos. I love the real deal as much as the next person, but I hate squirrels more than I love the real deal. Squirrels and other outdoor animals eat and destroy real outdoor decorations. So if you buy fake pumpkins and gourds, you can save them and reuse them year to year outside and inside. I add to my collection annually, but I'm certain I've had my handful of originals for up to 10 years. I learned this from my mom, BTW. ;)

  • Save your flower urns from Summer, old baskets and get a few lanterns- they make the best props when creating a Fall display.

  • Buy and gather from all over. Don't put all your eggs in one basket. I have Fall decorations from Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel, local home stores (mostly in Iowa), and this year I added a number of items from Hobby Lobby and my local King Soopers grocery store - no joke! Who knew, huh?

  • Last but not least, I think the best tip/trick I know of is to use Fountain Grass as your filler for your flower pots/urns during the Summer, and then when Fall hits, you rip out your thriller flowers (petunias for me) and your spiller vines (sweet potato vine over here). Your somewhat dried fountain grass is remaining and then it looks like you effortlessly cut down some dried stalks and propped them in the middle of your pumpkin display. Game changer, huh? I must admit, I learned this from my mom as well. She's the queen of making a house a home, and her home in the Fall is TOP NOTCH. What can I say, I get it from my mama, and I'm okay with that!

I hope these few tips and tricks help elevate your Fall decorating game!
