To Peloton or Not to Peloton

I have mentioned here and there before that I enjoy a good workout. I make it a priority and certainly make working out part of my daily/weekly routine. But it has not always been easy and it definitely has not always been this convenient. For the longest time, I belonged to a gym in Denver. A gym that I loved (and still do), a community I counted on and instructors that became my friends and confidants. But last Summer when I resigned from my old job, I had to make some choices as far as where to put all our dollars, so I decided to cancel my gym membership and create a gym in our garage. This decision was not easy, I still miss all my friends at the gym I went to, but I have to say the convenience of being able to walk out my back door and get a good workout in trumped everything.

Part of my "garage gym" was that I signed up for the Peloton app and used it for spin workouts via my rode bike as well as the other workouts Peloton offers. It's very inexpensive, effective and served a great purpose, however I knew it was temporary until we pulled the trigger and bought our own Peloton. I say this because we had been talking about it FOREVER - probably well over a year and maybe closer to two years. So when I started my new job just a few weeks ago we finally made the call and ordered our own. It seemed as though we were the last people on Earth to buy one, but it turns out I was wrong. The amount of questions I've received regarding our Peloton purchase has blown me away. The questions have ranged from "how hard are the workouts?" to "do you think it's worth the cost?" Given all the interest, I thought I would make a list to summarize why we bought our Peloton and perhaps why you should too if you're thinking about it.

  • If you like to cycle, it's a no brainer!

  • With that said, you get way more workouts than just cycle - you get access to running, yoga, strength, meditation, HIIT, stretching, etc.

  • It's a great cardio workout that is easier on your body, joints, etc.

  • It's incredibly convenient and eliminates the need to drive and pack up for the gym (one of my FAVORITE things)

  • The instructors are 100! My favorites are Ally Love, Emma Lovewell, and Olivia Amato, and Alex Toussaint.

  • The cost is fairly nominal compared to other gym memberships. I think all in we pay $100/month and for perspective I was paying roughly $120/month at the gym I used to belong to. You can pay for the bike outright or you can finance it with 0% apr. And $100/month covers two accounts so if you do the math, that's pretty reasonable ($50/person).

  • You can buy the accessories on Amazon - the bike mat, shoes, clips and/or pedals - for cheaper. So don't stress about the expense of the accessories. And if you have road bike shoes, all you need are the appropriate clips.

  • The customer service is amazing! They are helpful if you call, the people working in the stores are so kind, and the installation people were great. When they set up the bike, they run through every possible scenario the bike has to offer as well as measure you to make sure you know the appropriate settings based on your height. They also have a pretty great warranty.

  • You have 30 days to figure out if you like it. If you decide it's not for you, they come and snag it from you as if it was never in your house and you get a full refund. Simple as that.

  • The bike itself is very quiet. So you could be working out in the next room and your sleeping babe, house guest, partner, etc would be none the wiser. The bike also connects to AirPods so there's that.

  • AK has worked out multiple times/week since we had it installed. That is more times/week than when we were training for our marathon years ago. So at the very least if it makes someone healthier in your home, it's definitely worth it.

  • And last but not least, our current state of social distancing, the Peloton stands out on its own. I would have nearly had a panic attack a year ago if I was counting on gym workouts, but not now. We have not been inconvenienced in the slightest and we owe that all to owning a Peloton and having unlimited access to not only cycling, but all their workouts

These are the reasons why we decided to Peloton if you will. If you're on the fence, I recommend getting the app for a few months and seeing how much you like it. If this was enough to convince you, you can order via the website, over the phone or in person in one of the stores.
